A tragic road accident in Umuahia, the capital of Abia State, has resulted in the deaths of two young men. The incident involved a motorcycle and a heavy-duty Mack truck carrying chippings. Both victims were reportedly residents of the Umuahia South Local Government Area of the state.
The fatal crash occurred on Thursday at the Express Tower area along the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway.
According to eyewitness reports, the motorcycle was traveling at high speed when the rider lost control while attempting to navigate a section of the busy highway.
The loss of control led to a violent head-on collision with the oncoming truck. Witnesses at the scene described hearing a loud bang before discovering that the two youths on the motorcycle had sustained fatal injuries upon impact with the heavy vehicle.
Officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) arrived promptly at the scene to manage the situation. They coordinated the evacuation of the victims and worked to clear the wreckage to prevent further traffic congestion on the major expressway.
The victims were rushed to a nearby hospital; however, medical personnel confirmed that they were dead on arrival. Their bodies have since been deposited at the morgue as authorities begin the process of notifying their families.
Ngozi Ezeoma, the Sector Commander of the FRSC Abia State Command, confirmed the incident to the press. The accident serves as a somber reminder of the dangers of speeding and the high risks faced by motorcyclists on major federal highways.
