Lagos to Prosecute Man for Indiscriminate Waste Dumping

By Rachel Akper

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to prosecute a man arrested for indiscriminate waste disposal, reinforcing its commitment to enforcing environmental sanitation laws.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed that the suspect was apprehended during a routine early morning patrol after he was caught dumping refuse on a public road.

Wahab stated that the offender would be charged in line with existing environmental regulations, stressing that illegal waste disposal poses serious threats to public health, blocks drainage systems, and contributes to flooding.

He reiterated that the state maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward environmental violations and will continue to intensify enforcement operations to deter offenders.

The commissioner added that the government is scaling up surveillance and enforcement activities across the state to ensure compliance with sanitation laws.

Authorities also urged residents to adopt proper waste disposal practices and work with licensed waste operators, including the Lagos Waste Management Authority, to maintain a cleaner and safer environment.

The arrest, officials say, underscores ongoing efforts by the state to promote environmental sustainability and uphold public hygiene standards.
