2027: INEC Extends Deadline for Party Membership Register Submission

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has given political parties more time to submit their membership registers. This extension is for the digital records needed ahead of the 2027 general elections. Parties now have extra days to complete and send in their verified lists of members.

The move is meant to help parties prepare properly and avoid last-minute problems.

INEC made the change after listening to concerns from several political parties. Many said the earlier deadline was too tight, especially for updating records and adding new members. With the extension, parties can now organise their data more carefully.

This includes making sure every member’s information is correct and up to date.

The membership register is very important for elections. It helps INEC know which parties are real and strong enough to take part. Parties must submit both paper and digital copies in the right format.

The records also need to include details like national identification numbers for members. This makes the process clearer and reduces fake claims during elections.

The extension comes as parties begin to get ready for primaries and other activities leading to 2027. Some parties were worried they might miss the old deadline and face punishment, such as not being allowed to field candidates. The new timeline gives them breathing space to do things the right way without rushing.

INEC has reminded all parties to use this extra time wisely. The commission wants every group to follow the rules so the election process stays fair and smooth. Proper membership records help prevent disputes and build trust in the system.

This decision is seen as a helpful step by many. It shows INEC is willing to adjust when needed while still keeping the election timetable on track. As parties work on their registers, the focus remains on having credible and organised political groups for the 2027 polls.
