Tragedy struck Ridawa village in Kano State when a sand pit suddenly collapsed on Wednesday morning.
The disaster occurred while local laborers were underground, trapping an unspecified number of workers beneath the earth.
The victims were busy excavating soil for brick-making when the pit walls unexpectedly caved in. The collapse was so rapid that many workers were unable to scramble to safety before being buried by the rubble.
While official death tolls remain unconfirmed, local sources fear several workers have died. Numerous others were pulled from the debris with various injuries and required urgent medical treatment at nearby facilities.
Local residents and responders quickly launched a rescue mission to reach those buried. However, the sheer volume of collapsed sand and the difficult terrain hindered their efforts, leaving many victims trapped for hours.
Hon. Sani Bala, a federal lawmaker representing the area, confirmed the incident and estimated that at least 10 people were buried. He called for immediate government support to provide better equipment for the rescue operations.
The Kano State Fire Service noted they are still awaiting a formal report from their local office regarding the incident.
Spokesperson, Saminu Abdullahi stated they would provide further updates once they verify the full details of the disaster
