Labour Party Postpones Congresses, National Convention, Sets Up Planning Committee
The Labour Party has postponed its planned ward, local government, state congresses, and national convention, citing the need to accommodate an ongoing membership re-registration exercise.
The party announced the decision following a stakeholders’ meeting involving members of its Interim National Working Committee and representatives of labour unions.
The party’s earlier schedule had set ward congresses for March 26, local government congresses for March 28, state congresses for March 31, and the national convention for April 11. These activities have now been put on hold.
According to the party, the postponement is intended to allow wider participation from existing members and prospective entrants as part of efforts to strengthen its internal structure.
As part of the revised plan, the Labour Party has inaugurated a 45-member Congress and Convention Committee to oversee preparations and ensure a smooth process when the activities resume.
The committee is chaired by Ginger Onwusibe, a member of the House of Representatives representing Isiala Ngwa South/Isiala Ngwa North Federal Constituency. Other members include several party stakeholders drawn from different regions and structures within the party.
During the inauguration of the committee, National Chairman Nenadi Usman urged members to carry out their duties with fairness, diligence and commitment, emphasizing the importance of proper planning.
The party also appealed to members, supporters, and the Independent National Electoral Commission to understand the adjustment, adding that a new timetable for the congresses and convention will be announced at a later date.
