Bayelsa Governor Praises Tinubu for Repositioning Sports Administration
The Bayelsa State government has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his efforts in restructuring and modernizing sports administration across Nigeria.
Governor Douye Diri, represented by his deputy Peter Akpe, made the remarks during the 2026 Extraordinary General Assembly of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) held in Yenagoa.
He described the federal government’s initiatives as a “landmark shift” that would enhance governance, accountability, and stakeholder engagement in Nigerian sports.
The governor highlighted several of Tinubu’s reforms, including the transition from a Ministry of Sports to a National Sports Commission, the revival of the National Sports Institute, and the ongoing refurbishment of the National Stadium in Abuja.
Diri said these measures would significantly improve Nigeria’s competitiveness on the global sports stage. He also showcased Bayelsa State’s commitment to sports development, noting the construction of a 30,000-capacity FIFA-standard stadium in Igbogene, Yenagoa, aimed at making the state a hub for national and international sporting events.
The governor urged sports stakeholders to uphold transparency and integrity to ensure sustainable growth in the sector. In a show of solidarity, the NFF Extraordinary Congress praised President Tinubu for his continued support of Nigerian football.
The federation cited enhanced budgetary allocations and financial incentives for national teams as critical steps that would strengthen preparations and participation in international competitions.
Tinubu’s sports reforms, including the creation of a stand-alone National Sports Commission, have been designed to protect the autonomy of sports federations and promote overall development.
State leaders and sports stakeholders have welcomed the reforms, emphasizing the sector’s importance for national unity, youth empowerment, and international recognition.
