Wike-Backed PDP Accuses Turaki of Plot to Stop Abuja National Convention
A fresh crisis has deepened within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the faction loyal to Nyesom Wike has accused a rival group led by Tanimu Turaki of plotting to halt the party’s forthcoming national convention in Abuja.
The Wike-aligned National Caretaker Working Committee (NCWC) alleged that the Turaki-led bloc is making moves to obtain a court injunction aimed at stopping the convention scheduled to hold later this month in the Federal Capital Territory.
Speaking on behalf of the faction, its spokesperson, Jungudo Mohammed, described the alleged plan as a deliberate attempt to destabilize the party and frustrate preparations for the convention.
He insisted that previous rulings by both the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal have affirmed the legitimacy of the caretaker leadership, stressing that there is no legal basis to stop the gathering. The group further urged the judiciary to resist what it termed the misuse of court processes to interfere in the party’s internal affairs, maintaining that all arrangements for the convention have been concluded.
However, the Turaki-aligned camp has denied the allegations, dismissing them as unfounded. Its spokesperson, Ini Ememobong, said the faction is not aware of any plan to seek a court order to stop the convention, adding that the group remains committed to resolving internal disputes through dialogue.
The latest development underscores the deepening leadership crisis within the PDP, with both factions locked in a struggle for control of the party’s structure ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Despite the ongoing tensions, the Wike-backed leadership has reiterated its determination to proceed with the Abuja convention as scheduled, setting the stage for a critical test of authority within one of Nigeria’s leading opposition parties.
