MC Oluomo Defends Leadership Claim as NURTW Secretariat Faces Takeover Attempt
Amid a leadership dispute within the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, has reaffirmed his claim to the position of National President following an attempted takeover of the union’s national secretariat in Abuja.
The action was led by Tajudeen Baruwa and his supporters early Monday, who cited two court judgments in his favour as justification for seizing control. Baruwa also claimed to have written to the Nigerian Police for assistance in regaining access to the secretariat, but said the responses were not encouraging, prompting him to act “in a peaceful manner.”
Reacting to the incident, Akinsanya stated that he is not a defendant in the court rulings being used to support Baruwa’s actions. He noted that the judgments have been appealed and a stay of execution has been granted, and he has not held any discussions with Baruwa or other involved parties.
Assuring union members that security agencies are managing the situation, Akinsanya urged NURTW members nationwide to remain calm, maintain peace, and adhere to the law, cautioning against actions that could disrupt public order.
