Vinícius Brace Fires Real Madrid to Derby Victory Over Atletico
Real Madrid secured a dramatic 3-2 win over city rivals, Atletico Madrid on Sunday night, with Vinícius Júnior delivering a match-winning performance to keep Los Blancos firmly in the La Liga title race.
The high-stakes encounter at the Santiago Bernabéu came just hours after Barcelona recorded a narrow 1-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano, piling pressure on Carlo Ancelotti’s side to respond. Madrid did exactly that, maintaining a four-point gap behind the league leaders with a hard-fought derby triumph.
Atletico struck first against the run of play late in the opening half. A well-worked move saw Ademola Lookman finish clinically from close range after a clever assist inside the box, handing Diego Simeone’s side the advantage.
Despite dominating much of the early exchanges, Madrid had to wait until after the restart to turn the tide. Vinícius restored parity from the penalty spot shortly after the interval, calmly converting after Brahim Díaz was brought down in the area.
Momentum quickly shifted in favour of the hosts, and Federico Valverde capitalised on a defensive lapse moments later to put Madrid ahead. The Uruguayan midfielder pounced on a loose ball inside the box to continue his fine scoring run.
Atletico, however, refused to back down. Nahuel Molina produced a stunning long-range effort midway through the second half to level the contest once more, setting up a tense finale. The deadlock did not last long. Vinícius stepped up again, cutting in from the flank before curling a superb strike into the far corner to restore Madrid’s lead and ultimately seal the victory.
The closing stages were far from straightforward for the home side, as Valverde was shown a red card for a late challenge, forcing Madrid to see out the game with ten men. Atletico pushed for a late equaliser, coming close on multiple occasions, but were unable to find a way past a resilient Madrid defence.
The result marks a significant moment for Madrid manager Álvaro Arbeloa, who was overseeing his first derby since taking charge in January. Meanwhile, Simeone, managing his milestone 50th Madrid derby, was left frustrated as his side fell just short. Atletico remain fourth in the standings, while Real Madrid continue their pursuit of Barcelona at the summit, keeping the title race finely poised.
