Vice President Kashim Shettima is set to receive Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, into the All Progressives Congress (APC) this Tuesday.
This move marks a major political shift as the Governor officially defects from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the national ruling party.
The announcement was made by the Zamfara APC Chairman, Tukur Danfulani Maikatako, during a recent stakeholders’ meeting in Gusau. He confirmed that the Vice President and the party’s national leadership would visit the state capital to oversee the formal welcoming ceremony.
Governor Lawal, who previously left the APC to win the governorship under the PDP, described his return as a “homecoming.” He cited the PDP’s internal crises and legal battles as primary reasons for his departure, stating they hindered his mission to rebuild the state.
This defection is a strategic victory for the APC, strengthening its dominance in the North-West region. Party leaders emphasized that Zamfara has traditionally been an APC stronghold and believe the Governor’s return will unify political actors toward a common development goal.
The state chapter of the APC has finalized preparations for the high-profile visit, expecting a massive turnout of supporters. The event is designed to showcase the party’s growing influence and consolidate its power base ahead of future electoral cycles.
The move follows weeks of speculation and high-level consultations between Lawal and political stakeholders. By joining the APC, the Governor aims to align Zamfara more closely with federal policies to better address the state’s pressing security and economic challenges.
