SERAP Demands Transparency in ₦200tn NNPCL Probe

By 𝔸bdulrazak Tomiwa

SERAP has urged Senate President, Godswill Akpabio to ensure full transparency in the ongoing probe into ₦200 trillion allegedly “missing or unaccounted for” within the NNPCL between 2017 and 2023.

In a letter dated March 21, 2024, the organization demanded that the Senate Public Accounts Committee disclose the names of all implicated officials, regardless of their political or social status.

The group expressed concern over the slow pace of the inquiry, noting that repeated delays and the failure of officials to appear undermine public confidence and risk the distortion of vital evidence.

Discrepancies reportedly involve ₦103 trillion in joint venture costs and ₦107 trillion in receivables and subsidies, making the publication of audit reports necessary to prevent a political cover-up.

SERAP requested a clear timeline for the appearance of individuals and the conclusion of the probe, emphasizing that Nigerians have a constitutional right to know how national wealth is managed.

The organization warned of legal action if these transparency measures are not implemented within seven days, citing the Nigerian Constitution and the UN Convention against Corruption as legal grounds.

Stressing the need for public trust, SERAP stated, “The allegations that ₦200 trillion is missing or unaccounted for, whether fully accurate or partly overstated, can only be taken seriously by Nigerians if the Senate is fully transparent in its ongoing investigation regarding the credibility, plausibility, and accuracy of the claims.”
