First Lady Condemns Assaults on Women at Delta Festival

Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has condemned the reported physical and sexual assaults on women and girls during the Alue-Do Festival in Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the First Lady described the incidents as “degrading and barbaric,” expressing concern over viral videos showing victims being attacked during the traditional celebration.

She stated that while cultural practices are important, they must not be used to justify abuse or violation of fundamental human rights.

Tinubu stressed that no tradition permits the infringement on the dignity and freedom of women and girls, calling for respect and protection at all times.

She commended the Nigeria Police Force for making arrests in connection with the incident and urged authorities to ensure that those responsible are prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The First Lady also advised victims to seek medical and psychological support, while offering prayers for their recovery and well-being.

The incident has sparked widespread public outrage, with calls for justice and renewed attention to issues of gender-based violence linked to cultural events.

The Alue-Do Festival, a longstanding traditional celebration in Delta State, has come under scrutiny following the reports, prompting increased advocacy for the protection of women and girls.

Tinubu reiterated the need for collective efforts to safeguard vulnerable groups, in line with ongoing initiatives focused on women’s empowerment and protection.
