The Edo State Police Command has arrested several students from Igbinedion Education Centre following a viral bullying video. The suspects are set to be charged in a juvenile family court.
This action follows a thorough investigation into the footage showing senior students physically assaulting their peers.
The conflict began when two 14-year-old girls attacked a fellow student who reportedly insulted their deceased father. During the altercation, the girls also physically confronted a parent who attempted to intervene.
Following this violent display, the school management immediately expelled the two female students involved.
A retaliatory attack occurred the next day when the son of the assaulted parent targeted the girls’ brother. This revenge assault was recorded and shared online, leading to widespread public concern. The police confirmed that all individuals directly connected to these violent cycles have now been apprehended.
The Edo State Ministry of Education has strongly condemned the incident as a violation of safety and discipline. Permanent Secretary Edith Ebomoyi stated that such behaviour is completely unacceptable in educational institutions. The school has since reinforced its commitment to preventing future occurrences of such misconduct.
In response, the Commissioner of Police ordered the intensification of the “Operation Safe Schools Initiative” across the state. This mandate aims to identify gaps in school supervision and leverage lessons learned from this case. The goal is to create a more secure environment for all students.
The Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV) has also been mobilized to engage with students and administrators. Through advocacy and sensitization, the program seeks to reorient students toward non-violent conflict resolution. This initiative focuses on teaching children to report grievances through appropriate official channels.
Authorities have urged parents and school officials to take greater responsibility for the moral upbringing of their wards. The police command appealed for public calm while promising that justice will be served. Proactive measures are now being emplaced to safeguard children and maintain law and order.
