Nigeria Wheelchair Basketball Team Heads to Angola for Commonwealth Qualifiers
The Nigeria Wheelchair Basketball Team is on its way to Luanda, Angola, to take part in the 2026 IWBF Africa 3×3 Championship.
This tournament, running from March 22 to 27, doubles as the qualifying event for the Commonwealth Games. Eight dedicated athletes will represent the country after wrapping up a solid two-week training camp in Abuja.
The team prepared hard at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium from March 8 to 21. The closed camp helped sharpen skills, build teamwork, and boost fitness. Players showed strong commitment, ready to face tough competition on the continental stage and fight for a spot at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The President of the Nigeria Wheelchair Basketball Federation expressed full confidence in the squad. He praised their quality, resilience, and determination, saying the athletes trained well and are set to deliver good results. He believes their performance can secure Nigeria’s qualification and make the nation proud.
This trip highlights Nigeria’s growing focus on inclusive sports. Wheelchair basketball gives people with disabilities a chance to compete, build confidence, and inspire others. The federation sees the event as an important step in promoting equal opportunities in sports across the country.
Support from the National Sports Commission played a big role in the preparation. Officials provided the needed environment for training, equipment, and logistics. Such backing shows how teamwork between government and sports bodies can help athletes succeed on the international level.
Overall, the team’s journey to Angola carries high hopes for Nigeria. A strong showing could open doors to the Commonwealth Games and bring more attention to wheelchair basketball. Fans back home wish the players safety, strength, and success as they represent the country with pride.
