Lagos Indigenes Demand APC Governorship Slot, Back Tinubu’s Second Term

By 𝔸bdulrazak Tomiwa

A group known as the Lagos State Prominent Indigenes has officially called on the All Progressives Congress (APC) to reserve the state’s governorship slot for indigenous candidates in the 2027 general elections.

The group argued that this move is essential to ensure fairness, equity, and inclusiveness within the state’s political landscape.

During a technical committee meeting held on March 18, 2026, the group emphasized that it is time for the original inhabitants of Lagos to take full leadership. They specifically resolved that the offices of the Governor, Deputy Governor, and Speaker of the House of Assembly should be occupied by indigenes by the year 2027.

In a communiqué signed by the group’s convener, Adesunbo Onitiri, the members explained that their stance is rooted in the need to preserve local identity. They believe that prioritizing indigenes will strengthen stakeholder participation in governance and ensure that the state’s heritage is properly represented at the highest levels of power.

The group also used the occasion to declare their unwavering support for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term. Despite their specific demands for Lagos State leadership, they expressed confidence in the President’s national leadership and his ability to continue steering the country forward.

To ensure high standards of governance, the group outlined strict criteria for any aspiring indigenous governor. Candidates must possess verifiable Lagos ancestry and a strong track record of professional or academic excellence. This requirement aims to ensure that only the most qualified individuals lead the state.

Integrity was highlighted as a non-negotiable trait, with the group stating that prospective candidates must have clean records free from corruption or criminal allegations.

They are seeking leaders with exemplary personal conduct and proven achievements who can uphold the societal values and discipline expected of the office.

Finally, the group expressed its readiness to engage with all eligible aspirants to identify the best candidates for the job. Their ultimate goal is to support a transformational leader who can advance the collective interests of the people and drive the future development of Lagos State effectively.
