Anambra State Police arrested Chinedu Nwobi and Okwudili Nweke for their roles in the staged kidnapping of 18-year-old Mmesoma Ifediora. The teenager was “rescued” from a location known as “Malaysia Forest” in the Oyi Local Government Area after authorities uncovered the deception.
Investigations revealed that Mmesoma conspired with her boyfriend, Obiora Okoye (alias “Stainless”), to fake her abduction to extort ₦3 million from her parents. To sustain the ruse, the couple moved between various hideouts for two months and reportedly took an oath of secrecy.
Before the plot was foiled, Mmesoma’s parents had already transferred ₦240,000 into her OPay account as part of the ransom demand. While Mmesoma and two accomplices were successfully apprehended by the police, her boyfriend managed to flee the scene and remains at large.
During the raid, police recovered 10 SIM cards, a WiFi device, and a native “juju” calabash. They also found the white bandages and computer cables used to tie the girl’s hands and eyes to make the kidnapping appear authentic to her family.
In a separate operation, the police also arrested 24-year-old gang leader Chukwuebuka Eze, who was identified by a distinctive chest tattoo. Eze, found with a locally made shotgun, confessed to a different kidnapping in Obosi where ₦150,000 in ransom had been collected.
Police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga credited these arrests to intensified intelligence-led operations and strategic personnel deployment. All suspects involved in these criminal activities will be charged to court once the ongoing investigations are fully concluded.
