Peter Obi Raises the Alarm Over Nigeria’s Ranking in Global Terrorism Index

Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi has expressed concern over Nigeria’s worsening security situation following the country’s ranking among the most terror-affected nations in the latest Global Terrorism Index.

In a statement shared on his X platform, Obi described the report as a troubling reflection of leadership failure, noting that Nigeria recorded a significant rise in terrorism-related deaths. He warned that while other countries are making progress in reducing terrorism, Nigeria appears to be experiencing a reverse trend.

The former Anambra State governor attributed the situation to weak governance, corruption, and the failure to prioritise security, which he described as the primary responsibility of government. He stressed that systemic issues, including lack of accountability and disregard for the rule of law, have worsened the crisis.

Obi highlighted multiple security challenges confronting the country, including the insurgency by Boko Haram, the activities of Islamic State West Africa Province, as well as widespread kidnappings and attacks by armed bandits across rural communities.

He lamented the continued loss of lives, questioning the effectiveness of leadership in addressing the crisis.

According to him, the inability of the government to ensure safety raises fundamental concerns about its purpose.

The former presidential candidate cautioned against accepting insecurity as normal, urging authorities to take decisive and practical steps to improve the situation.

He called for a shift from rhetoric to measurable action in tackling the country’s security challenges.

Obi maintained that ensuring the safety of citizens is a basic obligation of government, adding that Nigeria must prioritise security to guarantee stability and national development.
