NYSC Official Detained Over Death of Female Corps Member in Ogun

A Local Government Inspector (LGI) with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Ogun State, Abass Olalekan, has been taken into police custody following the death of a female corps member, Victoria Ariyo, in Abeokuta.

Police authorities confirmed that the case is currently under investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID). The command’s spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, acknowledged the incident but did not provide details regarding the reported arrest.

Victoria Ariyo, who was serving in Abeokuta South Local Government Area, is believed to have died from complications related to pregnancy. Sources indicated that she had terminated the pregnancy before her condition worsened, leading to her death. She was later buried at Kobape Cemetery along Kobape-Sagamu Road.

Investigations have also been triggered by allegations linking the detained NYSC official to a possible intimate relationship with the deceased, although authorities have yet to confirm these claims.

A police source disclosed that Olalekan is being held at the state police headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta.

The incident comes shortly after the death of another corps member, Adeleye Mary, who also served in the same local government area. Mary, posted to Ogun State Television (OGTV) for her primary assignment, reportedly died under circumstances that remain unclear. Both deceased corps members were said to have been close associates.

Authorities say further details will emerge as investigations continue.
