Yobe Police Warn Against False Alarms Ahead of Sallah Celebrations

The Yobe State Police Command has cautioned the public against raising false alarms and sharing unverified information, warning that such actions can trigger panic and jeopardize lives.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Dungus Abdulkarim, highlighted recent incidents at prayer venues where false alarms caused disorder among worshippers.

“The consequences of false alarms in crowded settings can be devastating. They not only undermine public confidence but may also result in injuries or fatalities due to stampedes,” Abdulkarim said.

He urged residents to avoid creating unnecessary fear and to report any suspicious activities quietly to security operatives for prompt investigation and coordinated response if needed.

The spokesperson also warned against spreading information that has not been verified, particularly on social media, stressing that this could generate confusion and unwarranted alarm.

Prayer organisers were advised to work closely with security agencies to ensure safe and well-coordinated events. “Proper planning and collaboration with conventional and quasi-security outfits will allow for adequate deployment of personnel and a secure environment for worshippers,” Abdulkarim added.

The statement emphasised that the police command would take a firm stance against rumours or any material capable of disrupting public order.

Meanwhile, the Yobe State Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Ado, congratulated Muslims on the completion of Ramadan and extended greetings for the Sallah festivities. He also stressed that maintaining security is a shared responsibility between residents and law enforcement.

The warning comes in the aftermath of a series of bomb attacks in Maiduguri on Monday, which claimed 23 lives and left 108 people injured. The police reiterated the importance of vigilance and cooperation to prevent similar incidents and ensure a peaceful Sallah celebration across the state.
