Tinubu Raises Terrorism Concerns During Historic UK Visit

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has highlighted Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges, particularly terrorism, during talks with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London.

The meeting, held on Thursday at Downing Street, marked the final day of Tinubu’s state visit to the United Kingdom—the first by a Nigerian leader in nearly four decades.

Discussions focused on global security concerns, bilateral cooperation, and economic partnerships.

Speaking at the start of the meeting, Tinubu noted that both Nigeria and the United Kingdom face growing security threats, stressing that terrorism remains a major concern. He also pointed to the broader global impact of climate-related conflicts, saying no nation is immune to such challenges.

The president’s visit followed a recent attack in northeastern Nigeria, where suspected suicide bombings reportedly claimed several lives, underscoring the country’s long-standing battle with insurgency.

Nigeria has faced a jihadist insurgency since 2009, contributing to prolonged instability in parts of the country. The crisis has also drawn international attention, including comments from Donald Trump, which sparked diplomatic exchanges between Nigeria and the United States.

In his remarks, Starmer emphasised the long-standing relationship between both nations, describing it as historically significant and mutually beneficial. He expressed optimism about expanding cooperation across key sectors, including trade, defence, and development.

As part of ongoing economic collaboration, a major export agreement was announced involving British Steel and a Nigerian construction firm. The deal is expected to support infrastructure development in Nigeria while boosting industrial output in the UK.

The visit also featured ceremonial activities, including a carriage procession and inspection of a guard of honour, reflecting the diplomatic importance of the engagement.

Tinubu’s trip builds on previous interactions with the British monarchy, including a meeting with King Charles III in 2024, and signals renewed efforts to deepen ties between both countries.
