Gunmen numbering about six invaded the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria (CRIN) in Ibadan on Wednesday. During the attack, the armed group successfully abducted four cocoa farmers within the facility’s vicinity.

The victims were reportedly on a familiarisation visit when targeted. An eyewitness who escaped recounted that the kidnappers emerged from the bush and intercepted their vehicle near the institute’s Nursing Section.

The Oyo State Police Command confirmed the incident through spokesperson DSP Ayanlade Olayinka. Tactical teams were immediately deployed to the scene to track the criminals and ensure the farmers’ safe rescue.

In a swift response, police operatives successfully rescued one of the four kidnapped victims. Authorities also recovered a vehicle belonging to one of the farmers that had been abandoned during the ambush.

Police confirmed the arrest of three suspects currently undergoing interrogation. These individuals are being questioned to provide information regarding the gang’s hideouts and the location of the remaining captives.

Commissioner of Police Mr. Femi Haruna directed the Anti-Kidnapping Unit to reinforce local efforts. These teams are currently conducting an intensive bush-combing operation within the forest areas surrounding the research institute.

The rescued victim is in safe custody and providing intelligence to assist the investigation. Police reassured the public that efforts are being intensified to rescue the remaining three farmers and ensure justice.
