The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has directed a fresh promotion examination and interview for senior officers who were unsuccessful in recent promotion exercises, in what authorities describe as an effort to address concerns over fairness in the system.

A confidential police communication dated March 16, 2026, indicates that the Police Service Commission has rescheduled the exercise for affected Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs), Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs), Chief Superintendents of Police (CSPs), and Superintendents of Police (SPs).

The officers involved are those who did not secure promotion during the December 2025 and March 2026 cycles.

Police sources said the initiative is aimed at providing another opportunity for eligible officers to be assessed, following complaints that some personnel may not have been fairly treated in previous exercises.

The development comes amid allegations that irregular practices influenced promotions during the tenure of former IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, although officials have not publicly confirmed the claims.

According to internal directives, all police commands have been instructed to release affected officers to participate in the rescheduled exercise, which will include both written assessments and interactive sessions.

Participants have also been advised to prepare in key areas such as professional policing knowledge, relevant laws and operational guidelines.

To ensure order and security during the exercise, the IGP has approved the deployment of armed personnel and logistics support at the venue.

The promotion review has been fixed for March 24, 2026, at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja, with officers expected to appear in full official uniform.

Officials say the exercise is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen transparency, restore confidence in the promotion process, and reinforce merit-based advancement within the Nigeria Police Force.
