Ghana Expands into Central Asia with Landmark Kyrgyzstan Visa, Mining Deals

Ghana has signed a visa waiver agreement with Kyrgyzstan for holders of diplomatic and service passports, marking a significant diplomatic breakthrough as Accra strategically expands its reach into Central Asia.

· Ghana signed the visa waiver agreement with Kyrgyzstan during a historic diplomatic visit.

· The trip marks the first bilateral visit by an African foreign minister to the Central Asian nation.

· Both nations agreed to deepen ties through structured political and economic cooperation.

· Mining and trade are key focus areas as Ghana looks to diversify its global partnerships.

The agreement was formalized during an official visit to Bishkek by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who undertook a historic bilateral visit to the Central Asian country. During his trip, he held high-level talks with President Sadyr Japarov and Foreign Minister Jeenbek Kulubayev.

“Today we made history as I became the first African Foreign Minister to be hosted on an official visit in Kyrgyzstan,” Mr. Ablakwa stated.

The visa waiver, currently applicable to government officials, is expected to lay the groundwork for future discussions on broader access for ordinary passport holders.

In addition, the two countries signed a separate pact to establish formal political consultations, creating a structured and enduring channel for cooperation on trade, diplomacy, and technical exchanges.

This visit signals a deliberate shift from limited, multilateral engagement to a more focused bilateral relationship, building on initial contacts made on the sidelines of global meetings, including the United Nations General Assembly in 2025.

Economic cooperation, particularly in the gold mining sector, emerged as a central pillar of the discussions. Ghana is Africa’s largest gold producer, while Kyrgyzstan is home to the renowned Kumtor mine, one of Central Asia’s biggest gold operations and a cornerstone of its national economy.

“With Ghana as Africa’s leading gold producer and Kyrgyzstan home to the renowned Kumtor Gold Mines, we see strong potential for a mutually beneficial partnership in the mining sector,” Mr. Ablakwa noted.

The agreement with Kyrgyzstan adds to a growing list of visa waiver deals Ghana has signed in recent years as part of a broader strategy to enhance global mobility and forge stronger economic ties. In 2025 alone, Accra concluded similar arrangements with countries including Mozambique, Dominica, and São Tomé and Príncipe, with officials confirming that more than 10 new visa waiver agreements have been secured recently.

For Ghana, this outreach reflects a wider strategy to diversify its trade and investment partners beyond traditional markets in Europe, China, and North America. It underscores a growing trend of African economies actively building new economic corridors across Asia.

Kyrgyzstan, a landlocked nation bordering China, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, has recorded steady economic growth in recent years and is strategically positioning itself as a key node in emerging trade routes linking Asia with other developing regions.

This diplomatic engagement also comes as Kyrgyzstan steps up its ties with African countries, following its recent acquisition of observer status at the African Union. This signals a mutual and growing interest in South-South cooperation.

Officials from both countries stated that follow-up engagements will focus on trade missions, mining investment, and people-to-people exchanges, as they work to translate these early diplomatic successes into tangible economic outcomes.
