Four-Month Blackout Looms in Lagos Community Over Substation Maintenance
Residents and business owners in Amuwo-Odofin area of Lagos State are set to experience a prolonged power outage following the commencement of scheduled maintenance on a major electricity substation serving the community.
The disruption, which may last up to four months, is tied to ongoing works on a 132kV substation located within the Amuwo transmission network. The maintenance exercise is part of efforts by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) in collaboration with Ikeja Electric to upgrade and rehabilitate critical power infrastructure in the area.
According to officials, the exercise is expected to affect multiple feeders supplying electricity to residential neighbourhoods and commercial hubs across Amuwo-Odofin. As a result, households and businesses may face intermittent or complete blackout throughout the duration of the project.
The affected areas are expected to include key parts of the local government, with both 11kV and 33kV feeders impacted during the maintenance period. Ikeja Electric said the upgrade is necessary to improve long-term power reliability and enhance service delivery to customers within its network.
The company, however, acknowledged the inconvenience the outage will cause and urged residents to make alternative arrangements. The development has raised concerns among residents and business operators who fear increased operational costs, particularly for those dependent on generators and other alternative energy sources.
Nigeria’s power sector continues to grapple with infrastructure challenges, with periodic maintenance and grid limitations often resulting in supply disruptions across different parts of the country.
