FG Advances Plan to Bring UK Degrees Home Through Coventry University Partnership

The Federal Government has advanced plans to establish a United Kingdom-accredited university campus in Nigeria through a partnership with Coventry University, in a move aimed at expanding access to quality higher education.

Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, disclosed this in a post on X, stating that discussions were ongoing in London alongside President Bola Tinubu to facilitate the initiative.

Alausa said the partnership would lead to the establishment of Coventry University Nigeria, where students would be able to obtain fully accredited UK degrees at a lower cost without travelling abroad.

“For too long, families have had to send their children thousands of miles away in search of quality education. We are changing that,” he said.

According to the minister, the proposed campus will be located in Alaro City, Lagos, and will offer Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes across science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM), as well as Business and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).

He added that admissions are expected to commence between the third and fourth quarters of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals.

Alausa noted that the initiative would not only improve access to international-standard education but also reduce the financial burden on Nigerian families.

“As I’ve said, we want Nigerian parents to enjoy having their children at home, while still receiving a world-class UK education,” he said.

He further explained that the project is part of broader efforts by the administration to strengthen Nigeria’s human capital development by equipping students with skills needed for innovation, productivity and long-term economic growth.

The minister described the partnership as a step toward “bringing global opportunity home,” adding that it aligns with the government’s vision to transform the country’s education sector and workforce capacity.
