By Momodu Favour

Basirat Damilola Marshall, daughter of renowned Fuji musician King Wasiu Ayinde Marshall, has officially declared her intention to contest for a seat in the Lagos State House of Assembly, representing Surulere Constituency II in the 2027 general elections.

Marshall made her political ambition known during a recent engagement with community stakeholders and supporters in Surulere, where she highlighted her commitment to grassroots development, youth empowerment, and improved representation.

Speaking on her motivation, she emphasized the need for fresh perspectives in governance, particularly in addressing challenges affecting young people and women within the constituency. She noted that her decision to run was driven by a desire to contribute meaningfully to policy-making and community advancement.

“I am stepping forward because I believe Surulere deserves vibrant and responsive representation. Our youths and women must have a stronger voice in governance,” she said.

Marshall, who is said to have a background in public service and community engagement, also pledged to focus on areas such as education, job creation, and infrastructure development if elected.

Her declaration has begun to generate reactions across political circles in Lagos, with some observers viewing her candidacy as a blend of celebrity influence and emerging youth participation in politics.

Political analysts note that Surulere, a densely populated and politically active constituency, is expected to witness a competitive race ahead of the 2027 elections.

While party affiliation details are yet to be formally announced, Marshall is expected to unveil her campaign structure and political platform in the coming months.

Her entry into the race adds to the growing number of young aspirants seeking elective positions across Nigeria, reflecting a broader shift toward increased youth involvement in the country’s political landscape.
