Terrorists Strike Another Military Camp in Borno

By momo Favour

Suspected Boko Haram terrorists on Monday launched a fresh attack on a military formation in Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State.

Sources said the insurgents stormed the 25 Task Force Brigade in Damboa at about 12:50 a.m., firing sporadically in what appeared to be an attempt to infiltrate the town through the military base.

The incident occurred less than 30 minutes after another attack by suspected Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province fighters at Ajilari Cross and nearby communities in Maiduguri. Residents said the attack in Maiduguri was quickly repelled by security operatives after several minutes of gunfire.

Confirming the incidents, the spokesperson for the Borno State Police Command, ASP Nahum Daso, said joint security forces successfully foiled the terrorists’ attempt to infiltrate the community.

In a brief statement on Monday, Daso said the attack in Damboa was thwarted around 1:00 a.m., restoring calm to the area.

“In another separate incident, at about 0100 hours, joint security operatives thwarted a suspected terrorist attack in Damboa Local Government Area. Normalcy has been restored and more details will follow,” he said.

Although full details of the attack were still unclear as of the time of filing this report, residents confirmed hearing heavy gunfire near the military base during the night.

One resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the terrorists attempted to break into the town through the 25 Task Force Brigade but were met with strong resistance from troops stationed at the base.

“It was a horrible night. When we heard that terrorists were trying to enter Damboa through the military camp, the news spread quickly. But we thank God for the effort of our gallant troops who resisted them,” the resident said.

Security sources say the situation has since been brought under control, while further details of the incident are expected from authorities.

The latest attack highlights the continued security challenges in Nigeria’s North-East, where Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgents have carried out repeated assaults on communities and military formations in recent years.
