Pope Leo XIV Calls for Ceasefire Amid Escalating Middle East Conflict

Pope Leo XIV has called for an immediate halt to hostilities in the Middle East, urging all parties involved to return to dialogue and seek peaceful resolution.

In a post on X on Sunday, the pontiff made a passionate appeal for a ceasefire, saying: “On behalf of the Christians of the #MiddleEast, and of all women and men of good will, I appeal to those responsible for this conflict: cease fire! May paths of dialogue be reopened! Violence can never lead to the justice, stability and peace for which the people are waiting.”

There are currently no indications that the pope’s call will be heeded, as all sides involved in the conflict have so far rejected ceasefire efforts.

The war began after US and Israeli forces launched an unprovoked attack on Iran amid ongoing negotiations, escalating across West Asia and resulting in the deaths of over 2,000 people, including 168 Iranian schoolgirls.

Last week, Pope Leo also mourned the killing of Lebanese priest, Pierre El-Rahi, who died from Israeli tank fire in Qlayaa, a village in southern Lebanon.

Reports indicate that Oman and other nations have made multiple attempts to mediate, but the White House has reportedly declined engagement. President Donald Trump stated on Saturday that while Iranians have sought a deal, the terms “aren’t good enough yet,” adding that any ceasefire agreement would need to be “very solid.”

Iran has similarly rejected a ceasefire until US and Israeli strikes cease, signaling a likelihood of a prolonged conflict in the region.
