BAT-IG Raises the Alarm Over Politically Engendered Terrorism, Calls for Decisive Security Reforms

The Bola Ahmed Tinubu Ideological Group (BAT-IG) has called for decisive and strategic action to address the recent surge in terrorist attacks across the country, warning that the growing wave of insecurity may be driven by political desperation and organised violence.

This position was expressed by the Convener of BAT-IG, Honourable Bamidele Atoyebi, who said the pattern of attacks across the country reflects a troubling intersection between political interests and orchestrated violence aimed at destabilising national security.

According to Atoyebi, many analysts and security observers have noted that sudden spikes in violence and terrorist activities often coincide with heightened political tensions, particularly as the country approaches major election cycles.

He noted that such attacks are often used to create fear and uncertainty among citizens, thereby fostering a narrative that the government has failed in its responsibility to maintain order and protect lives and property.

Atoyebi described the strategy as a dangerous and destructive attempt by certain political actors to score what he termed “cheap political points” by sponsoring violence that leaves communities devastated and the nation destabilised.

He explained that by targeting military formations and civilian settlements, sponsors of violence attempt to undermine public confidence in the government and create the impression that only a change in political leadership can restore peace and stability.

The BAT-IG convener also raised concerns about the role of insiders and saboteurs within the security architecture, warning that individuals with access to sensitive information may be aiding terrorist groups by leaking intelligence or providing logistical support.

He noted that such internal compromises make the fight against insurgency significantly more difficult, as terrorist groups are able to anticipate military operations and exploit weaknesses within the system.

Atoyebi emphasised that addressing insecurity requires a shift from purely defensive responses to more aggressive strategies that weaken the operational capacity of terrorist groups.

He urged the military to intensify efforts aimed at destroying terrorist equipment, weapon stockpiles and logistical bases, noting that stripping insurgents of their weapons and mobility would significantly reduce their ability to carry out coordinated attacks.

He further advocated a localised security approach, drawing from the Yoruba proverb, “Onilu konife kilu rẹ tu,” which translates to “the owner of a town would not wish for it to be destroyed.”

According to him, deploying security personnel who originate from affected communities to serve in those areas would improve intelligence gathering and operational efficiency because of their familiarity with the terrain and personal connection to the communities.

The BAT-IG convener also stressed that the welfare of security personnel must remain a top priority for the government.

He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving increased funding for military equipment and improved allowances for security personnel, describing the move as a positive step toward strengthening the country’s defense capacity.

However, Atoyebi called for additional welfare measures, including comprehensive health insurance and educational support for the children of frontline security personnel until they reach the age of 20.

He said such initiatives would boost morale among soldiers and officers who risk their lives daily to protect the nation, noting that a security officer who is confident about the welfare of their family is more committed to defending the country.

Atoyebi added that providing sustained support for wounded, fallen, and retired security personnel would strengthen loyalty within the armed forces and reinforce national appreciation for their sacrifices.

He also recommended a rotational deployment system for troops in order to maintain operational efficiency on the frontlines.

According to him, regularly rotating security personnel prevents battle fatigue and ensures that forces remain alert, motivated, and prepared to confront evolving security threats.

The BAT-IG convener further called for intensified grassroots sensitization campaigns in communities affected by insurgency.

He urged residents to refrain from aiding terrorist groups through the sharing of sensitive information and encouraged citizens to report suspicious activities to security agencies for prompt investigation and prosecution.

Atoyebi warned that community collaboration with terrorists ultimately threatens the safety of local populations and could lead to the displacement of residents from their ancestral lands.

Looking ahead to the 2027 election cycle, Atoyebi expressed concern that the pattern of politically motivated insecurity could intensify as political competition grows.

He stressed that Nigeria cannot afford to wait for political contests to subside before restoring peace and stability.

According to him, by implementing coordinated military, intelligence, welfare, and community-based strategies, the government can dismantle the networks sustaining terrorism and restore lasting security across the country.

The Bola Ahmed Tinubu Ideological Group reaffirmed its commitment to promoting policies and initiatives that strengthen national stability, support security personnel, and advance the ideals and governance philosophy associated with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
