Skip 2026 World Cup, Trump Tells Iran

President Donald Trump has warned the Iranian national football team to skip the 2026 World Cup for their own “life and safety.
Despite the team being technically qualified, Trump stated on Truth Social that their presence is no longer appropriate given the current hostile climate.
This marks a sharp reversal from earlier assurances. While FIFA President Gianni Infantino recently claimed Trump welcomed all teams, escalating military conflicts and U.S. strikes on Iran have since shifted the administration’s stance toward the team’s participation.
The situation peaked following military operations that reportedly led to the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader. In response, Iran’s Sports Minister labeled the U.S. a “current regime,” declaring it impossible for their athletes to compete in a country they are at war with.
The 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, was set to feature Iran in Los Angeles and Seattle. However, the Iranian team’s absence from a recent FIFA planning meeting in Atlanta strongly signals their imminent withdrawal from the tournament.
The controversy also extends to the women’s team, with several players seeking asylum in Australia after being labeled traitors at home. Trump has called for these athletes to be protected, further intensifying the political divide surrounding Iranian sports.
If Iran officially withdraws, it would be an unprecedented move for a modern World Cup. While FIFA monitors the situation, Iraq is currently the leading candidate to replace them if a vacancy is confirmed before the June kickoff.
