The Nigerian Senate has urged the Federal Government to establish a permanent military base in Kwande, Benue State.
This resolution follows a motion regarding persistent, deadly attacks by armed invaders in the region. Lawmakers believe a constant military presence is the only way to deter further violence and ensure a rapid response to security threats.
Senators expressed deep concern over the escalating humanitarian crisis and the high death toll resulting from these raids. Thousands of residents have been displaced, losing their ancestral homes and livelihoods to the violence. The Senate noted that several farming communities have been completely deserted due to the ongoing destruction of property and lives.
The legislative body highlighted Kwande’s strategic border with Cameroon, which makes it a gateway for cross-border criminal activity. Establishing a base in this specific axis is seen as vital for securing Nigeria’s borders and protecting the state’s agricultural output. Protecting these communities is considered essential for both regional safety and national food security.
Beyond military intervention, the Senate directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide immediate relief to displaced persons. Many victims are currently in camps without adequate food, shelter, or medical care. Lawmakers emphasized that addressing this secondary humanitarian crisis is just as urgent as the security measures.
The Senate mandated its defense-related committees to work with security agencies to implement these resolutions swiftly. They called for improved intelligence gathering and proactive policing to prevent future attacks. The safety of Benue citizens remains a top priority for maintaining the overall stability of the North-Central region.
