Lagos Warns Residents to Prepare for Possible Flooding, Heavy Rainfall in 2026
The Lagos State Government has warned residents to prepare for possible flooding and heavier-than-usual rainfall during the 2026 rainy season.
The state Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, issued the warning on Thursday during the Seasonal Climate Prediction briefing held in Ikeja.
Wahab said weather forecasts indicate that Lagos could experience above-normal rainfall this year, with the rainy season expected to begin in late March and continue until early December.
According to him, the state may record an average annual rainfall of about 1,936 millimetres, which is higher than the long-term average observed in previous years.
He explained that several parts of the state, including Ikeja, Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos Island and Epe are likely to experience significant rainfall during the period.
The commissioner warned that the expected heavy downpours could trigger flash floods, particularly in low-lying communities and areas with poor drainage systems. He also noted that strong winds may occur at the beginning and end of the rainy season.
Wahab urged residents to remain vigilant and support government efforts to prevent flooding by avoiding activities that block drainage channels.
He stressed the importance of complying with environmental regulations, warning that indiscriminate dumping of waste in canals and drainage systems contributes significantly to flooding in the state.
The commissioner added that the government has intensified its flood control strategies, including the clearing of drainage channels, desilting of canals and collaboration with relevant agencies to mitigate the potential impact of the anticipated rainfall.
He assured residents that the state remains committed to protecting lives and property, urging communities in flood-prone areas to take precautionary measures as the rainy season approaches.
