Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, Nigeria women’s national basketball team, delivered an impressive performance on Wednesday, defeating Colombia women’s national basketball team 70–37 in a Group Phase clash at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup Qualifying Tournament in France.
The Nigerian side asserted dominance from the opening quarter, setting the tone with aggressive defense and fast transitions that left the Colombians struggling to keep up. D’Tigress maintained control of the contest for more than 33 minutes, building a comfortable lead and preventing their opponents from gaining any meaningful momentum.
Nigeria’s defensive discipline proved decisive, as the team restricted Colombia to just 37 points throughout the encounter. The South American side found it difficult to penetrate Nigeria’s well-organised defensive setup and convert scoring opportunities.
Guard Ifunanya Okoro emerged as one of the standout performers for the Nigerian team. She delivered a strong all-round display, recording 10 points, four rebounds, three assists, and two steals in 28 minutes and one second on the court.
The victory highlights Nigeria’s intent to secure a place at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup, as the African champions continue their campaign in the qualifying tournament. The team’s balanced attack and defensive resilience will boost confidence ahead of their remaining group fixtures.
D’Tigress, widely regarded as one of Africa’s most dominant women’s basketball teams in recent years, will be aiming to build on the convincing win as they push for qualification to the global showpiece.
