Wike Insists on PDP Control

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike has reaffirmed his faction’s control over the PDP machinery, dismissing rival attempts to sideline him.
He maintains that his camp remains the legitimate authority within the party’s leadership.
This declaration intensifies the rift between Wike and the governor-led bloc, including figures like Seyi Makinde and Bala Mohammed. The party remains split into two camps following the 2023 elections.
The crisis peaked after a controversial Ibadan convention, which Wike’s camp boycotted and labeled illegal. In response, his faction formed a caretaker committee to challenge the convention’s outcomes.
Legal battles continue as a Federal High Court recently annulled the Ibadan convention, favoring Wike’s stance. However, the opposing NWC has appealed, arguing that courts should not interfere in party affairs.
Wike accused the governors of operating with impunity and disregarding the party’s constitution. He warned that their attempts to hijack the party are leading it toward total collapse.
The ongoing litigation has forced INEC into a neutral stance, leaving the party in administrative limbo.
Meanwhile, the national secretariat remains sealed by police to prevent further clashes.
Despite the friction, there are reports of potential reconciliation talks ahead of the 2027 elections. However, Wike’s firm stance indicates he will not accept a subordinate role in any deal.
The PDP’s future hangs on pending court rulings and the success of these peace talks. Currently, the internal fragmentation severely hampers its ability to function as an effective opposition.
