Hon. Mandela Obasi Defects to Labour Party After Meeting Governor Otti

By 𝔸bdulrazak Tomiwa

Hon. Mandela Obasi, the lawmaker representing Ohafia North Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Labour Party (LP).

The announcement followed a high-level, closed-door meeting held at the country home of Governor Alex Otti in Nvosi, Isialangwa South Local Government Area. The meeting included the Governor and his Deputy, Ikechukwu Emetu.

Speaking to journalists after the session, Obasi confirmed his decision to switch allegiance, marking a significant shift in the state’s legislative landscape. He expressed confidence in the current administration’s direction.

The three-term lawmaker cited the visible developmental achievements of Governor Alex Otti across Abia State as a primary motivation for joining the ruling party in the state.

Obasi also pointed to the internal crises and lack of clear leadership within the PDP as major reasons for his departure, claiming the party is currently fragmented.

He lamented that many remaining PDP members in the House already have divided loyalties with other parties like the APC and ADC, leaving him as one of the “last men standing.”

With this defection, the PDP’s presence in the Abia State House of Assembly has been further depleted, reportedly leaving the former ruling party with only one remaining lawmaker.

Obasi noted that while he has officially switched, a separate date will be arranged for a formal ceremony to receive his large group of supporters into the Labour Party.
