Supporters of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, are staging a mass protest today, Thursday, March 12, 2026, in Aba, Abia State. The demonstration aims to demand his immediate release from detention.
The “Coalition of Lovers of Freedom” organized the event, labeling it a “One Million March.” Distributed flyers invited supporters from across the South-East to converge on the city for this peaceful collective demand.
Former lawmaker Obinna Ichita issued a statement on Wednesday appealing for calm during the proceedings.
He urged all participants to maintain high levels of discipline, responsibility, and civility throughout the march.
Ichita emphasized that his call for peace aligns with ongoing efforts by various leaders to resolve Kanu’s situation constructively. He noted that the movement’s strength must lie in wisdom and respect for the law.
The former legislator advised protesters to respect security operatives and avoid any form of provocation. He stressed that the primary focus must remain on peaceful expression and the protection of lives.
Nnamdi Kanu is currently serving a life sentence following a 2025 conviction on terrorism-related charges. Despite the court’s ruling, his followers continue to advocate for his release as a necessity for regional peace.
With regional tensions high, security agencies are on alert to prevent any potential disorder. Organizers maintain that the march will remain a non-violent show of solidarity for their leader.
