Oyo State Moves LG Elections to December 2026

By 𝔸bdulrazak Tomiwa

The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission has rescheduled local government elections for Tuesday, December 29, 2026.

This change affects all 33 local government areas across the state.

Commission Chairman, Babatunde Adeniyi announced the update in Ibadan. The shift follows a recent adjustment to the national electoral calendar by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The election was originally set for January 16, 2027. However, INEC moved the Presidential and National Assembly elections to that same date, creating a scheduling conflict.

This rescheduling avoids logistical overlaps between state and national polls. It also ensures that security agencies are fully available to maintain order during the voting process.

Moving the date forward protects voter participation and ensures administrative clarity.

The commission aims to safeguard the integrity of the process by preventing operational congestion.

All political campaigns must now conclude by midnight on Monday, December 28, 2026. This gives candidates a clear deadline to finish their outreach before polls open.

The commission has also scheduled a date for potential runoffs. If necessary, rerun elections will take place across the state on Tuesday, January 5, 2027.

Chairman Adeniyi urged all stakeholders to align their preparations with the new December date. He reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to conducting a transparent and inclusive election.
