Osimhen Breaks Down as Galatasaray Fans Honour Late Mother Before Liverpool Clash
Victor Osimhen was visibly emotional on Tuesday night after supporters of Galatasaray unveiled a giant banner in honour of his late mother ahead of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 match against Liverpool F.C..
The tribute was displayed at RAMS Park shortly before kickoff in the first leg of the knockout tie, drawing a heartfelt reaction from the Nigerian striker.
The massive tifo banner portrayed Osimhen wearing a Galatasaray jersey while holding his younger self in what appeared to be a depiction of the neighbourhood where he grew up. Behind the scene, an image representing his mother was shown smiling, symbolising her influence in his life.
Earlier during the pre-match warm-up, fans had also unveiled another banner carrying the message about the importance of family. Osimhen posed for photographs with the banner before the start of the match.
Images from the stadium later showed the forward removing his protective face mask to wipe tears from his eyes after seeing the tribute. He subsequently walked toward the stands to acknowledge and thank the supporters for the gesture.
Osimhen, the youngest of seven children, lost his mother at an early age and has frequently spoken about how her memory shaped his determination and resilience during his journey to professional football.
The 27-year-old has played a key role for Galatasaray in this season’s Champions League campaign, scoring seven important goals that helped the Turkish champions reach the round of 16.
During Tuesday’s encounter, the striker also contributed an assist in the seventh minute as Galatasaray secured a 1–0 victory in the first leg of the tie against Liverpool.
