Binance Founder, CZ Becomes Richer Than Bill Gates

by Momodu Favour

The founder of cryptocurrency exchange Binance, Changpeng Zhao, has reportedly surpassed Bill Gates in net worth, marking a remarkable turnaround for the crypto billionaire less than two years after serving a prison sentence in the United States.

According to reports by Forbes, Zhao widely known as CZ has seen his wealth surge amid the continued growth of the global cryptocurrency market and the strong performance of Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange by trading volume.

The development comes just about a year and a half after Zhao’s legal troubles with U.S. authorities.

Following a sweeping investigation into Binance, the crypto mogul pleaded guilty to failing to maintain an effective anti-money laundering programme at the company. As part of a settlement agreement with U.S. regulators, Zhao paid a personal fine of $50 million, while Binance agreed to a massive $4.3 billion penalty.

The settlement also required Zhao to step down as chief executive officer of Binance. In addition, he served a four-month prison sentence in California.

Despite the controversy, Zhao has remained a dominant figure in the cryptocurrency sector. Much of his fortune is tied to his large holdings in Binance and digital assets, whose value has surged alongside renewed investor interest in cryptocurrencies.

Industry analysts say the rebound highlights the volatility and rapid wealth creation that still characterise the digital asset space. Zhao founded Binance in 2017 and quickly built it into the world’s leading cryptocurrency trading platform within a few years.

Meanwhile, Gates who made his fortune through software giant Microsoft has long been one of the world’s richest individuals but has seen his ranking fluctuate in recent years as he continues to donate significant portions of his wealth through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Zhao’s rise above Gates on the billionaire rankings underscores the increasing influence of cryptocurrency entrepreneurs in the global wealth landscape, even as regulators around the world continue to scrutinise the industry.
