The United States Embassy in Nigeria has issued a stern warning to its citizens regarding a potential terrorist threats. The alert specifically identifies U.S. government facilities and American-affiliated schools as the primary targets for these possible attacks.
According to the security notice published on March 10, 2026, the threat is particularly heightened within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. However, the embassy’s advisory covers all U.S. interests across the country.
U.S. citizens currently in Nigeria have been advised to exercise extreme caution and take additional security precautions. The embassy emphasized that individuals should remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings at all times to mitigate risks.
A key recommendation in the alert is for citizens to vary their travel times and routes. This tactic is intended to prevent predictable patterns that could be exploited by individuals monitoring the movements of embassy staff or students.
The advisory specifically mentions the U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos as areas requiring heightened awareness. Travelers to these diplomatic missions are urged to be more security-conscious than usual.
American-affiliated schools are also under high alert. The embassy suggested that parents and administrators review their personal security plans and maintain a low profile while conducting daily activities around these educational institutions.
The security alert also encourages citizens to avoid large crowds and public demonstrations, which can often become targets or flashpoints for violence. Staying informed through official government channels was highlighted as a priority.
While the embassy continues to monitor the situation, the Consular Sections in both Abuja and Lagos currently remain open. Citizens are encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive the latest security updates.
