Akwa Ibom Judiciary Adopts AI to Modernize Court Proceedings
By 𝔸bdulrazak Tomiwa
The Akwa Ibom State Judiciary has launched the integration of Artificial Intelligence into its court proceedings.
This modernization effort began on March 10, 2026, following a pilot training session for judicial staff.
Technical teams are currently assessing courtrooms to install essential hardware. This includes specialized audio capture and transcription equipment required for the program’s initial demonstration phase.
Chief Judge Ekaete Fabian-Obot stated that the initiative aims to accelerate case management and legal research. She described AI as a vital tool for boosting overall judicial productivity and administration.
The Chief Judge clarified that AI will assist, not replace, human officials. Judicial discretion and reasoning remain the responsibility of judges, guided by the Constitution and legal precedents.
The technology will specifically eliminate the physical burden of longhand writing. This shift is expected to reduce health challenges judges face from manually recording lengthy court proceedings.
LexScript AI is supporting the project, with Managing Director Emeka Albert praising the move toward innovation. He noted that the system will significantly streamline workflows for legal practitioners.
The next phase involves live court sittings to test the system in real-time. The Lextech Capture team will process ten cases per day through the AI-assisted platform during this trial.
This program marks a major step in Nigeria’s judicial digital transformation. Akwa Ibom aims to set a national standard for accountability and technological independence within the legal system.
