Aba River Pollution Now a Big Offence, Governor Alex Otti Warns Companies

Governor Alex Otti has issued a stern warning to companies operating in Aba and its environs, declaring that discharging untreated waste into the Aba River is now a serious offence.

Speaking on the escalating pollution of the river, the governor emphasized that companies must treat their industrial waste properly before disposal, noting that it is unacceptable for waste to flow into a river that serves as a water source for local communities.

“It is improper to discharge your waste into a flowing river where some people drink from,” he said. Governor Otti also revealed plans by his administration to dredge the Aba River down to Azumini Blue River.

The initiative aims to restore the river’s ecological health, reduce flooding risks, and support the development of a leisure and tourism hub at the Azumini Blue River.

This administration is committed to enforcing environmental laws strictly,” Otti added, warning that companies found violating the rules would face legal consequences.

The government has already engaged factories accused of polluting the river, notifying them of the need to comply with the new regulations. The Aba River, locally known as Iyi Aza Ogbor, has long suffered from industrial and domestic pollution, posing health risks to communities along its banks.

Governor Otti’s directive forms part of broader efforts to improve public health, environmental sanitation, and sustainable development in Abia State. Environmental experts have hailed the move as a significant step toward protecting water resources, ensuring community safety, and promoting eco-tourism in the region.
