The Power of Strategic Advocacy
By Bamidele Atoyebi
The strength and care of a nation is often measured by how it treats those who stand on its frontlines. In a drastic shift for Nigeria’s security architecture, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has embarked on a comprehensive restructuring of the welfare packages for the country’s military and security personnel. This move is not merely a bureaucratic adjustment but the realization of a vision rooted in deep advocacy and a commitment to those who sacrifice their comfort for national peace.
The journey to this milestone gained momentum just five days ago when the BAT Ideological group convener Hon. Bamidele Atoyebi held a high-level meeting with the Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Dr.Aisha Garba . The core of their discussion focused on a transformative proposal: ensuring free education for the children of Nigeria’s “fallen heroes.” This initiative was designed to honor the memory of the brave men and women who lost their lives, were wounded, or retired after years of dedicated service.
President Tinubu has now officially hosted the Service Chiefs in an Iftar dinner to discuss an upward review of salaries and allowances for military personnel. This engagement highlights a leadership style that is increasingly characterized by its ability to listen to progressive ideas from outside the traditional halls of power. By addressing the financial stability of the armed forces, the administration is sending a clear message that the labour of our heroes shall never be in vain.
Beyond salaries, the President’s plan includes a vital focus on the Service Brigade and the provision of decent accommodation for security personnel. Providing a dignified living environment is essential for maintaining high morale within the forces. It ensures that while soldiers are away on dangerous missions, they have the peace of mind that their families are safely and comfortably housed in well-maintained facilities as well as taken care of in all spheres of concern.
This development serves as a powerful testament to the influence of the BAT-IG movement. Despite having restricted access to the presidential villa and operating with limited resources, the group has successfully championed a cause that resonates with the heart of the administration. It proves that clear, progressive thinking can bridge the gap between advocacy and executive action and care.
The President’s willingness to “clock in” on these ideas shows he is a leader who values collaboration with like-minded individuals. While he may not possess all the answers, his openness to the BAT-IG’s proposals demonstrates a “progressive-minded” approach to governance. This synergy between the presidency and ideological groups is creating a roadmap for a more inclusive and responsive government.
The advocacy extends beyond traditional military branches to the nation’s grassroots defenders. The BAT-IG group emphasizes that improved welfare and educational benefits must reach the newly recruited Forest Guards and the Amotekun Corps, who face daily risks in the battle against insecurity. While the primary responsibility for the Amotekun Corps lies with the South-West Regional Commission and their respective state governors, the group advocates for a collaborative framework to ensure these brave operatives are not left behind in the national push for better security welfare.
Including these regional and specialized outfits ensures a truly holistic approach to safety. By supporting the families of Forest Guards and Amotekun members through state and regional initiatives, the government at both levels acknowledges their critical role in protecting Nigeria’s natural resources and rural communities. This inclusive strategy, supported by the governors, strengthens the entire security chain from deep forests to urban centers.
The group believes that if more attention and approval were given to such grassroots initiatives, the impact on national development would be even more profound. The success of this current welfare review should serve as a green light for further collaboration. It highlights that when the government empowers groups with a “progressive mindset,” the entire country benefits from innovative solutions to age-old problems.
This new era of welfare reform is about more than just numbers; it is about restoring the dignity of the Nigerian uniform. As the President continues to implement these reviews, the bond between the state and its protectors is being renewed. Nigeria is moving toward a future where the sacrifice of every security operative is met with the unwavering support and gratitude of the nation they serve.
