Iran Names Mojtaba Khamenei as Replacement Supreme Leader
Iran’s Assembly of Experts has reached a majority decision on a successor to the late Ali Khamenei as they named his son, Mojtaba as successor.
Reacting to the choice of Mojtaba, United States President, Donald Trump said he will not last long and will be killed. Israel also shares the same sentiment.
Assembly member, Mohsen Heidari Alekasir noted the chosen candidate is someone likely opposed by the United States. He suggested that being viewed as an enemy by Washington makes a candidate more suitable for the role.
The selection follows the death of Ali Khamenei on February 28 during a joint U.S.–Israeli strike in Tehran. The 88-member clerical body holds the exclusive constitutional power to appoint a successor after his 40-year reign.
This transition occurs amid an intense regional conflict between Iran and Israel. Recent hostilities have seen strikes on Gulf energy infrastructure and Israeli attacks on fuel facilities deep inside Iranian territory.
The Israeli military had earlier warned that it will target any newly appointed Supreme Leader. They further cautioned that individuals involved in the selection and appointment process are also considered legitimate military targets.
Mojtaba, the 56-year-old son of the late leader, had always been considered a frontrunner for the position though analysts warn his selection could be criticized as hereditary succession, which contradicts Iran’s 1979 revolutionary principles.
The Supreme Leader maintains ultimate authority over Iran’s state policy and its military forces. Consequently, this decision will define the nation’s trajectory during one of its most unstable geopolitical periods in decades.
The nation remained on high alert as the clerical body met to decide on the choice during an active and escalating war.
