IBEDC Blames Gas Shortage, Grid Constraints for Persistent Power Outages

The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) has attributed the persistent electricity supply challenges within its franchise areas to gas supply shortages and operational constraints affecting the national power grid.

In a statement addressing the situation, the company apologised to customers for the disruption caused by unstable electricity supply and appealed for patience while efforts are ongoing to improve service delivery.

According to IBEDC, the power supply difficulties experienced across parts of its distribution network are largely linked to broader challenges affecting electricity generation and transmission on the national grid.

The company explained that inadequate gas supply to power generating plants has significantly reduced the country’s electricity generation capacity, resulting in widespread load shedding across its service areas.

IBEDC further noted that electricity demand within its franchise has increased considerably in recent months, particularly following the inclusion of more Band A feeders in compliance with regulatory directives. Despite the rise in demand, however, the amount of electricity allocated to the company from the national grid has remained inconsistent and has occasionally declined.

The firm said the imbalance between available supply and customer demand has led to supply shortfalls in several communities served by the distribution company.

“As a result of these constraints, some communities within our franchise are experiencing supply shortfalls. We fully understand the frustration this has generated among our customers, and we sincerely apologise for the disruption to homes, businesses and economic activities,” the company stated.

IBEDC also acknowledged that the situation has triggered protests in some of the communities within its coverage areas. While recognising the right of residents to express their grievances, the company urged customers and community leaders to pursue dialogue rather than confrontation.

The distribution company added that it has been engaging with community leaders and other stakeholders to foster better understanding of the challenges and to seek sustainable solutions.

It also assured customers that it is working with stakeholders across the power value chain to address the imbalance in energy allocation, stabilise the national grid and improve electricity supply across its network.
