A tragic road accident on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway has claimed the lives of a toddler and two adults. The fatal crash, which occurred on Friday, March 6, 2026, was reportedly caused by a truck that suffered a mechanical brake failure.
According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), the articulated vehicle lost control and rammed into pedestrians and other vehicles. The impact was devastating, resulting in immediate fatalities at the scene.
In addition to the three people killed, six others sustained varying degrees of injuries. Emergency responders were quickly mobilized to the area to provide first aid and coordinate the rescue operation.
The injured victims were rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the mortuary. Traffic along the busy expressway was heavily disrupted as officials worked to clear the wreckage and restore normalcy.
This incident follows a series of recent fatal accidents on the same corridor, often attributed to reckless driving and mechanical failures. Authorities have repeatedly warned motorists, especially drivers of heavy-duty trucks, to perform regular maintenance on their vehicles.
Sector Commander Akinwunmi Fasakin emphasized the importance of safety checks, noting that many of these tragedies are avoidable.
He urged drivers to adhere to speed limits and remain vigilant, particularly at high-risk junctions.
Local government officials have also expressed concern over the safety of pedestrians and roadside traders in the area. In response to recent crashes, some local chairmen have ordered the immediate removal of illegal traders from road verges to minimize casualties.
The police have commenced an investigation into the specific circumstances of Friday’s crash to determine further liability. Meanwhile, the public has been advised to exercise extreme caution when navigating the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.
