FG Prioritizes Food Security as Economic Anchor

The Federal Government has emphasized that achieving food security is fundamental to Nigeria’s economic stability, national independence, and the reduction of poverty.
This position was shared by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during a Stakeholders’ Engagement Session held in Abuja on Friday.
The Minister explained that agriculture is a primary pillar within President Bola Tinubu’s broader economic reform agenda. He noted that the current administration is actively implementing specific programs aimed at boosting agricultural productivity and strengthening the nation’s food supply chains.
Highlighting the link between nutrition and sovereignty, the Minister stated, “Food security is national security; a nation that feeds itself strengthens its independence, stabilises prices, creates jobs and reduces poverty.”
He further noted that the engagement session is a reflection of the President’s philosophy of transparency and accountability.
The government remains committed to ensuring that Nigerians are not only kept informed but are also active participants in the policy-making process.
Idris stressed the importance of communication between the state and its citizens, noting, “Governance must not operate in isolation from the people; it must be open, responsive and anchored on dialogue.
Today’s engagement demonstrates this administration’s commitment to keeping Nigerians informed and involved.”
The Minister acknowledged that the administration inherited significant economic hurdles, including subsidy burdens and exchange rate distortions. He explained that these challenges necessitated “difficult but necessary” reforms intended to stabilize and reposition the economy for future growth.
Finally, the Minister reported that these strategic decisions are beginning to show positive results. He pointed to improved government revenue, a renewal of investor confidence, and stronger partnerships with international bodies as evidence of the country’s economic recovery.
