Builders Lament as Cement Price Hits N11,200 in Abuja
The price of cement has surged to about ₦11,200 per bag in Abuja, sparking concerns among builders, contractors and prospective homeowners over the rising cost of construction in Nigeria.
A market survey conducted in major building materials markets across the Federal Capital Territory indicates that the retail price of cement now ranges between ₦10,800 and ₦11,200 per 50-kilogram bag, depending on the brand and location. Industry operators say the latest increase has added further pressure on the construction sector, which has already been grappling with high material and logistics costs.
Dealers attributed the rise in price to increasing transportation expenses, production costs and distribution margins across the supply chain. According to them, retailers who purchase cement through middlemen often sell at higher prices compared to those who buy directly from manufacturers.
Some traders also noted that the cost of moving cement from factories to markets has risen significantly due to fuel prices and other operational expenses.
The development is expected to affect housing and infrastructure projects, as cement remains one of the most critical materials used in construction.
Block manufacturers have also warned that the rising price of cement could lead to an increase in the cost of building blocks and other construction materials, further pushing up the overall cost of building houses.
Construction experts say the continued increase in cement prices could slow down building projects and worsen Nigeria’s housing deficit if the trend persists.
They have therefore called for measures to stabilise prices and improve supply in order to support the construction industry and housing development across the country.
