President Hails Obasanjo’s Legacy as Former Leader Turns 89

President Bola Tinubu has extended birthday wishes to former President Olusegun Obasanjo on the occasion of his 89th birthday, describing him as a respected elder statesman whose impact continues to be felt in Nigeria, across Africa, and internationally.

In a statement released on Wednesday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu congratulated the former leader as he marked his birthday on March 5.

He noted that Obasanjo’s contributions and influence remain significant both within Nigeria and beyond.

The President highlighted Obasanjo’s record of service to the country, recalling his tenure as military Head of State between 1976 and 1979, when he oversaw the transition to civilian rule, as well as his later role as Nigeria’s first civilian president in the Fourth Republic from 1999 to 2007.

Tinubu also reflected on Obasanjo’s experiences in national service, including his role in the Nigerian Civil War, his imprisonment during the military era for opposing authoritarian rule, and his continued advocacy for Africa’s political and economic development.

He further acknowledged the former president’s intellectual contributions, noting that his writings and frequent public interventions demonstrate a strong commitment to national growth and development.

Tinubu offered prayers for continued good health, strength and wisdom for the former president, expressing hope that he will remain active in service to the country and humanity.
