FEC Approves ₦1.2tn Roads, Bridges Across Nigeria
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved several major road and bridge projects across the country valued at over ₦1.2 trillion, as part of the Federal Government’s efforts to improve transportation infrastructure.
The Minister of Works, David Umahi, disclosed this on Wednesday while briefing State House correspondents after the FEC meeting presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Umahi said the approved projects include the reconstruction, rehabilitation, and completion of critical federal highways across different regions of the country, as well as the design phase for a new bridge in Lagos.
According to the minister, FEC approved the reconstruction of the Ibadan–Ife–Ilesa Road, involving 103 kilometres of dual carriageway. The project, valued at ₦427 billion, was re-awarded after previous contractors recorded minimal progress.
He also announced the approval of the Kano–Kongolam Road project, covering 132 kilometres. The road will be redesigned into a three-lane concrete carriageway linking Kano, Jigawa and Katsina states. The project, estimated at ₦334 billion, will include solar-powered streetlights and closed-circuit television cameras.
The council further approved the rehabilitation of Phase Two of the Keffi–Nasarawa–Abaji Road, covering 129.3 kilometres at a cost of ₦203 billion.
FEC also approved ₦91 billion for the completion of the remaining 71 kilometres of the Suleja–Minna dual carriageway project, with one carriageway already awarded.
In addition, the council approved ₦146 billion for the reconstruction of an 86-kilometre section of the Abuja–Lokoja Road, which has suffered significant deterioration. Umahi said multiple contractors, including Julius Berger, will handle the project.
The council also approved ₦5.6 billion for the detailed engineering design and costing of the Carter Bridge project in Lagos. The design phase will include preparations for the demolition of the existing bridge and the construction of a new structure by Advanced Engineering Consultants.
Umahi said the projects are part of the Federal Government’s ongoing commitment to improving road infrastructure and enhancing connectivity across the country.
